Marin GreenPlay Camp is proud to introduce our guides for Summer of 2017!  They have been selected based on their love of and experience working with kids and their passion for nature and adventure.  Our senior guides also have an extensive background in the native plants and animals of the Bay Area and are avid naturalists.  All Marin GreenPlay Guides are certified in first aid and CPR and are familiar with the application of EpiPens and Auvi-Qs.  Every guide has been background checked.  Guides receive comprehensive training on our locations, activities, and safety protocols.  All of our guides have flawless driving records and have received training on how to drive a 12 passenger van.  They can't wait to meet your kids!

CAMP GUIDE - MELISSA WITTE IS A VETERAN GREENPLAY GUIDE.  SHE IS AN AVID BIRDER, BACKPACKER, ORGANIC GARDENER, AND SELF-DESCRIBED JILL-OF-ALL-TRADES. SHE HAS WORKED AS A FIELD BIOLOGIST, GARDENING TEACHER, AND NATURALIST, AND RECENTLY EARNED HER CREDENTIAL TO TEACH HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE, AS WELL AS A MASTER OF SCIENCE IN EDUCATION, AND TEACHES IN PETALUMA. HER WORK AS A FIELD BIOLOGIST INCLUDES MONITORING PIPING PLOVERS & SEA TURTLE NESTS, BANDING SONGBIRDS, EDUCATING AT A FALL RAPTOR MIGRATION SITE, STUDYING RHINOCEROS AUKLETS, AND TRACKING BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS. HER FAVORITE PASTIMES INCLUDE WATCHING BUTTERFLIES LAY EGGS AND LADYBUG LARVAE SCURRY AROUND IN HER GARDEN, AND STARTING NATIVE PLANTS FROM SEED, AS WELL AS SCOUTING FOR SNAKES, LIZARDS, AND OTHER CRITTERS. SHE IS THRILLED TO INTERPRET AND OBSERVE THE NATURAL WORLD WITH PEOPLE OF ALL AGES AND LOOKS FORWARD TO EXPEDITIONS AND ADVENTURES WITH GREENPLAY THIS SUMMER.

CAMP GUIDE - RHEA STEWART-LAWS IS ANOTHER VETERAN GREENPLAY GUIDE.  RHEA IS A MARIN COUNTY NATIVE, IS A SELF-PROCLAIMED “NATURE FREAK.” SHE DISCOVERED HER PASSION WHILE ATTENDING THE TEAM PROGRAM DURING HIGH SCHOOL AT TAM HIGH, AN EXPERIENCE THAT TAUGHT HER HOW TO SURVIVE IN THE WILDERNESS AND TO APPRECIATE THE NATURAL WORLD. AFTER A BRIEF STINT TRAVELING THE GLOBE AND FIVE YEARS STUDYING FASHION DESIGN IN NEW YORK CITY, SHE RETURNED TO MARIN IN ORDER TO PURSUE HER TRUE PASSION – NATURE. WHILE OBTAINING AN AA DEGREE AT COLLEGE OF MARIN IN NATURAL SCIENCE, SHE HONED HER NATURALIST SKILLS, LEARNING HOW TO WATCH BIRDS, TRACK ANIMALS, AND TO SEE NATURE AS AN INTERCONNECTED WEB BETWEEN THE LIVING AND NON-LIVING. IN HER OFF-TIME SHE PREFERS TO SPEND HER DAYS HIKING, BIRDING, CAMPING, CYCLING, SWIMMING, BASICALLY ANYTHING THAT GETS HER OUTSIDE. SOON SHE WILL COMPLETE HER DEGREE IN ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES AT MILLS COLLEGE, WHERE SHE IS CURRENTLY CONDUCTING RESEARCH ON URBAN LAKE ENVIRONMENTS. RHEA PARTICULARLY ENJOYS PROVIDING ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION TO KIDS AND BRINGS OVER FIFTEEN YEARS OF CHILDCARE EXPERIENCE TO GREENPLAY. 

GREENPLAY YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM TRAINER - WENDY DALIA JOINED MARIN GREENPLAY CAMP IN 2016 TO TRAIN MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN LEADERSHIP, TEAMWORK, THE BASICS OF NATURE AWARENESS, GROUP FACILITATION AND COMMUNICATION, AND MORE.  WENDY HAS A DEGREE IN MARINE BIOLOGY FROM LONG ISLAND UNIVERISTY IN SOUTHHAMPTON, NY AND IS THE FORMER DIRECTOR OF CONSERVATION AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS AT THE RICHARDSON BAY AUDUBON CENTER IN TIBURON.  WENDY IS A WILDERNESS FIRST RESPONDER AND A MEMBER OF MARIN COUNTY'S SEARCH & RESCUE TEAM.  WENDY ENJOYS BACKPACKING WITH HER FAMILY, YOGA, SWIMMING, AND TAE KWON DO.

OUTDOOR CLIMBING PROGRAM CO-DIRECTORS - ERIK GRIFFITH & HALEY BRISCOE HAVE GUIDED MANY HAPPY CAMPERS WITH MARIN GREENPLAY CAMP SINCE THE SUMMER OF 2015.  ERIK AND HALEY ARE FROM SACRAMENTO WHERE THEY HONED THEIR CLIMBING SKILLS AT PIPEWORKS. ERIK HAS AN AMGA SINGLE PITCH CERTIFICATION, AND BOTH ARE CERTIFIED WILDERNESS FIRST RESPONDERS.  WHEN NOT SHOWING OUR CLIMBERS THE LATEST MOVES ON THE ROCKS, ERIK AND HALEY ARE CLIMBING YOSEMITE'S GREAT WALLS.

CLIMBING GUIDE - WILL MOORE JOINS MARIN GREENPLAY CAMP FOR SUMMER OF 2017.  HE IS A NATIVE OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON AND A GRADUATE OF WESTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY WITH A DEGREE IN GEOGRAPHY AND NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT.   WILL IS AN ACCOMPLISHED ROCK CLIMBER AND HOLDS A SINGLE PITCH INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION FROM THE AMGA AND IS A WILDERNESS FIRST RESPONDER.  WILL HAS YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN THE OUTDOOR INDUSTRY AND MOST RECENTLY SERVED AS THE ROCK CLIMBING COACH AT THE PACIFIC EDGE CLIMBING GYM IN SANTA CRUZ.  PRIOR TO THAT, WILL TAUGHT SNOWBOARDING AND CLIMBING AND LED THE CLIMBING PROGRAM AT LEGACY OUTDOOR ADVENTURES.

CLIMBING GUIDE - JUAN DIEGO REYES JOINS MARIN GREENPLAY CAMP FOR SUMMER OF 2017.  HE IS A GRADUATE OF APPALACHIAN STATE UNIVERSITY WITH A DEGREE IN TECHNOLOGY & ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN.   JUAN IS AN ACCOMPLISHED ROCK CLIMBER AND HAS CLIMBED ALL OVER THE WORLD.  ORIGINALLY FROM COLOMBIA, JUAN GREW UP IN NORTH CAROLINA AND IS A FLUENT SPANISH SPEAKER.  JUAN IS ALSO A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER AND BRINGS YEARS OF DIVERSE ENVIRONMENTALLY-RELATED PURSUITS AND TRAVEL EXPERIENCES TO SUPPORT HIS MENTORSHIP OF OUR CAMPERS.

CAMP GUIDE - HANK TAFT JOINED MARIN GREENPLAY CAMP IN SUMMER 2016. HANK IS A MILL VALLEY NATIVE WHO WILL GRADUATE FROM TAMALPAIS HIGH SCHOOL IN MAY AND HEAD TO  UC BERKELEY IN THE FALL.  HANK HAS PLENTY OF EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH KIDS WHILE COACHING THE SPORTS HE PLAYED IN HIGH SCHOOL:  SOCCER & LACROSSE.  HE COACHES YOUTH SOCCER WITH TOP SOCCER, WORKS WITH THE SOUTHERN MARN LACROSSE CLUB, AND HELPED FOUND THE MARIN CITY LACROSSE CLINIC.  HE LOVES TO BE OUTDOORS, EXERCISING, HIKING, EXPLORING, LEARNING ABOUT NATURE, AND GEEKING OUT ABOUT STAR WARS WITH THE CAMPERS. 

CAMP GUIDE - JESS LERNER JOINS MARIN GREENPLAY CAMP FOR SUMMER OF 2017.  JESS IS AN EDUCATOR, NATURALIST, AND DEEP NATURE CONNECTION FACILITATOR.  TRAINED IN THE 8 SHIELDS MODEL OF EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING AND COMMUNITY BUILDING, SHE IS COMMITTED TO CULTURAL REPAIR WORK AND NATURE-BASED EDUCATION, AND HAS BEEN WORKING TO CONNECT KIDS WITH THE NATURAL WORLD FOR MORE THAN 8 YEARS.  SHE HOLDS A MA IN ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES FROM BROWN UNIVERSITY AND RECENTLY RECEIVED HER UC CALIFORNIA NATURALIST CERTIFICATION.

CAMP GUIDE - ANIKA CHAMBERS JOINS MARIN GREENPLAY CAMP FOR SUMMER OF 2017.  BORN AND RAISED IN MILL VALLEY, ANIKA IS A STUDENT AT CAL POLY, SAN LUIS OBISPO.  YOU CAN USUALY FIND HER RUNNING OR BIKING THROUGH ROLLING HILLS, STUDYING AT A CAFE, COOKING WITH FRIENDS, OR LISTENING TO NPR.  A GRADUATE OF TAMISCAL'S TEAM PROGRAM, ANIKA HAS A DEEP APPRECIATION FOR THE NATURAL WORLD, EXPERIENCE IN WILDERNESS LEADERSHIP AND IS A CERTIFIED WILDERNESS FIRST RESPONDER.  WITH YEARS OF CHILDCARE EXPERIENCE, SHE IS EXCITED TO JOIN MARIN GREENPLAY TO WORK WITH OUR CAMPERS THIS SUMMER.

CAMP GUIDE - JASON LEUNG JOINS MARIN GREENPLAY FOR SUMMER 2017.  JASON IS A MILL VALLEY NATIVE, TAMALPAIS HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE AND AN AVID HIKER WHO WILL ATTEND UC DAVIS  IN THE FALL.  JASON LOVES WORKING WITH KIDS AND HAS DONE SO IN THE SPORTS CONTEXT WITH ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS THE MILL VALLEY SOCCER CLUB AND OTHERS.  HE CAN OFTEN BE FOUND TUTORING CLASSMATES IN SCIENCE AND MATH  SUBJECTS AND PHOTOGRAPHING  NATURE, DRAWING AND PLAYING GUITAR.

CLIMBING GUIDE - MAX STEWART JOINS MARIN GREENPLAY FOR THE SUMMER OF 2017.  WITH A STRONG PASSION FOR THE OUTDOORS, EDUCATION AND HEALTHY LIVING, MAX IS CERTIFIED BY THE AMGA AS A SINGLE PITCH INSTRUCTOR AND IS A WILDERNESS FIRST RESPONDER.  MAX HAS DEDICATED OVER TWO DECADES TO HIKING, CLIMBING, AND PADDLING AROUND THE WORLD.  HE'S CLIMBED 4 OF THE WORLDS 7 SUMMITS AND MANY OF THE TALLEST PEAKS IN THE LOWER 48 AS WELL AS THROUGHOUT EUROPE.

FOUNDER - JULIE HANFT FOUNDED MARIN GREENPLAY CAMP. A UC CERTIFIED CALIFORNIA NATURALIST AND AIRBNB EXPERIENCE HOST, SHE HAS WORKED IN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION FOR SEVERAL YEARS WITH LOCAL SCHOOLS AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY ORGANIZATIONS, CLEAN MILL VALLEY, TREE FROG TREKS, AND THE RICHARDSON BAY AUDUBON CENTER. JULIE HAS A CERTIFICATE IN NATURAL HISTORY AND A CERTIFICATE IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE FROM THE COLLEGE OF MARIN, RECEIVED SUSTAINABILITY TRAINING AT DOMINICAN UNIVERSITY AND HAS A B.A. FROM BARNARD COLLEGE AND A J.D. FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI. JULIE IS A MEMBER OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL FORUM OF MARIN AND THE FOUNDER OF THE MARIN OPEN GARDEN PROJECT. JULIE IS A BOARD MEMBER OF THE TURTLE ISLAND RESTORATION NETWORK/SPAWN, MILL VALLEY STREAMKEEPERS AND MARIN CLEAN HIGHWAYS.
